- W2071327556 abstract "Abstract On sonication in water, cholestanol and lysophosphatidylcholine (lysoPC) in 1:1 molar ratio form unilamellar vesicles which are similar to lysoPC/cholesterol vesicles, as judged by gel exclusion chromatography, electron microscopy, and differential thermal scanning. However, the lysoPC/cholestanol bilayer is different in several respects: vesicles formed by mechanical shaking or sonication are, on the average, larger; the entropy of activation of permeation by glycerol is 20% lower; 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of unilamellar vesicles show that the glycerol-2 and -3 carbons of the lysoPC are less efficiently immobilized in the lysoPC/cholestanol than in the lysoPC/cholesterol bilayer. Cholestanone also is solubilized by lysoPC but does not form stable bilayer vesicles with it. Electron microscopy of co-dispersions in water shows mainly non-vesicular particles and NMR spectra show that there is association of cholestanone and lysoPC but no efficient immobilization of the glycerol carbons of the lysoPC. We conclude that, with either cholesterol or cholestanol, lysoPC forms complexes stabilized by hydrogen bonding between lysoPC and the OH group of the sterol in the ‘hydrogen belts’ of the bilayer. The lysoPC/cholestanol complex appears to be the less stable; this may be due to the difference in latitudinal angles of the sterol OH bond vectors." @default.
