• W2071418982 abstract "The turbulent deposition of aerosol particles from an air stream on to a surface is one means by which airborne particulates are removed from the polluted atmosphere. Aerosol particles will deposit on a surface due to the action of the turbulent air motion of the carrying stream. The rate of turbulent deposition can be significantly greater than the deposition rates due to effects of gravity, Brownian motion, electrical charge, diffusiophoresis, and thermophoresis. In each case, the turbulent air eddies impart a directed motion to the particles. In the present paper the combined effect on particle motion of eddy diffusion and particle inertia is described by an “effective” eddy diffusion coefficient, ṫ, directed toward the surface. Of principal concern is the evaluation of this eddy diffusion coefficient in the region very close to a surface in which the turbulence scale and intensity decrease rapidly as the surface surface is approached. These eddy diffusion coefficients are predicted from particle deposition velocity measurements through the use of a model which describes particle deposition in terms of eddy diffusion, Brownian diffusion, and the terminal settling velocity. Experimentally, particle deposition has been determined separately for both the ceiling and floor of a wind tunnel surface. These are the first data that permit reasonable estimates of the effect of gravity on the particle diffusivity." @default.
