- W2071489458 abstract "304 The purpose of this study was to determine the relative efficacy of the new lipid lowering drug Atorvastatin (Lipitor) compared to non-lipitor (NL) lipid lowering agents in decreasing serum cholesterol (CHOL) and triglycerides (TG) in kidney transplant patients. Methods: This retrospective study reviewed serial serum cholesterol and triglycerides in kidney recipients transplanted between 11/23/82 to 2/28/97. Patients with graft loss or patients with serum creatinine >2.5 mg/dl were excluded from study in order to study the effect of these agents on serum lipids in the absence of renal dysfunction. Demographics and laboratory data were collected from the transplant database including age, sex, date of transplant, diagnosis of diabetes, race, weight (kg), immunosuppression, serum creatinine, cholesterol, and triglycerides. Serum lipids were analyzed with respect to levels after the institution of non-lipitor agents versus Lipitor (L). Four groups of patients were identified, those who 1) received no therapy, 2) received non-lipitor agents alone, 3) received non-lipitor agents and were converted to Lipitor (10-20mg/day), and 4) received lipitor (10-20mg/day) initially for treatment of hyperlipidemia. Statistical analysis was performed using Student's t-test (SPSS version 8.0); p< .05 was considered significant. Mean CHOL in patients who did not receive therapy was 216 ± 42, and mean TG was 222 ± 115. Results:(Table)TableConclusions: 1) Lipitor as primary therapy was more effective than other lipid lowering agents in lowering both serum cholesterol (23% vs 14%) (p=.001) and triglycerides (29% vs 11%) (p=.02) in kidney transplant recipients. 2) Lipitor lowered serum CHOL (by 11%) and TG (by 15%) in patients switched from non-lipitor therapy to Lipitor due to continued hyperlipidemia on non-lipitor agents. There was a greater decrease in CHOL in the Lipitor group compared to the NL → L group (p=.057). The decrease in TG in the Lipitor group compared to NL → L group also tended to be greater (p=NS)." @default.
