In phase-separated polyelectrolyte–surfactant micelle complexes 2H NMR differentiates the loosely packed complexes formed in the presence of the relatively stiff polyelectrolyte poly(sodium styrenesulfonate) from the tightly packed complexes formed in the presence of the relatively flexible polyelectrolyte poly(acrylic acid). Moreover, 2H NMR reveals the presence in such complexes of a thermotropic phase transition, accompanied by anisotropic reorientations about the surfactant’s long molecular axis. In surfactant monolayers coating a latex particle, 2H NMR is employed to monitor surface electrostatics as a function of added polyelectrolyte. It is discovered that flocculation of the particle dispersion by added polyelectrolyte occurs at a concentration far below that necessary to neutralize the initial surface charge of the surfactant monolayer. In bilayer membranes it is shown that the sensitivity of 2H NMR to surface charge confers the ability to differentiate and characterize polyelectrolyte-induced domains enriched with oppositely-charged surfactants." @default.
