- W207154346 abstract "Using a Local Area Network In a College of Education Since the Fall semester of 1986, a Macintosh local area network has been in operation in the College of Education at the University of Houston (UH) to support the college's instructional program. Our experiences in setting up a lab and conducting classes and research on our network--which we have named MacLAN--are potentially useful to others who are considering similar operations on their own campuses. This report summarizes what we did, what we have learned and what we would recommend that others do differently. Several years ago, UH made a commitment to integrate computing into all aspects of instruction, research and administration. Although UH has provided support for a variety of mainframes, minis and microcomputers, a particularly strong base of Macintosh users has developed. Currently, there are more than 1,000 Macintoshes of varying capabilities on campus. In November 1985, a proposal was submitted to Apple requesting an equipment grant, which was approved in Spring 1986. Apple awarded us 12 Macintosh Plus computers, which were the latest models of the Macintosh available at that time. Soon after that, the UH Computing Center agreed to provide software and some additional equipment so that instruction could be provided to classes of up to 20 students at a time. During Summer 1986, the microcomputers were used as stand-alone stations while appropriate networking software was evaluated. Hardware Configuration The hardware currently in use in MacLAN includes 11 Macintosh Plus computers, two Apple ImageWriter II printers, an Apple Hard Disk 20 (HD-20) and an Apple LaserWriter printer. A 12th Macintosh Plus and a second hard disk are also connected to the network but are located in a separate room and are used for development rather than instruction. Connections among equipment are made via the AppleTalk networking system running MacServe software from Infosphere, Inc. of Portland, Ore. All cables are plug-in types; none of the connections are hard-wired. Like Caldwell and Bluhm, we've experienced some difficulty with the cables being pulled loose unintentionally, disconnecting machines from that point to the end of the network. At first, a third Imagewriter printer was installed on the network with print-spooling capabilities through the hard disk, but it was disconnected because students were confused about whether to use the spooled printer or the networked printers. Having two printers on the network seemed adequate for the 11 microcomputers anyway. However, when many students need printouts at once--when assignments are due, for instance--there is typically some wait time for printer access. Also, when two or more students simultaneously send information to be printed to the same printer, the network sometimes ceases to function. The warning for one of the students to wait does not always seem to be given prior to failure of the network. Installing the Networking Software At the time the choice was made to install MacServe as the networking software, the nature of the demands that were to be placed on the software's capabilities had not been thoroughly identified, but everyone consulted recommended MacServe. In light of the experience subsequently gained with this network, another choice might now be made, e.g., TOPS from Centram Systems West of Berkeley, Calif. or The Keeper for Reach, Inc. of North Vancouver, British Columbia. The Keeper was actually installed in late April 1987, just three weeks prior to the end of the semester. We chose, however, not to ask students to use it during the Spring semester. It was not used for instruction until Summer, and there has not yet been enough experience gained from its use to evaluate it. Since The Keeper is a true file server, we expect that it will replace MacServe for all instructional uses of the network. The primary purpose of the networking software is to provide access for all users in a classroom to common instructional software and multiple printers. …" @default.
