- W2071603788 abstract "The development of cognitive theory can benefit from the study of patients with neuropsychological disorders in several ways. The study of such cases often brings to light unanticipated findings that force a reconsideration of current theories and may serve to bring together theories from seemingly disparate fields. Computational modeling efforts can be improved through an attempt to model the marked dissociations in function that are found for patients. The study of patients for whom one cognitive mechanism is disrupted can reveal the operation of the remaining mechanisms in a more direct fashion than is possible with normal subjects. The approach of studying the role of a preserved mechanism in isolation can be applied to both children and adults with neuropsychological disorders to determine if the role of this mechanism changes with development. Overall, the study of individuals with disorders of language and memory provides an important source of evidence for developing and constraining cognitive theory." @default.
