- W2071707765 abstract "Hybrids obtained by transplanting blastula nuclei of Discoglossus pictus into enucleated eggs of Xenopus laevis are arrested at the late blastula stage and die some hours later. Until the time of arrest, hybrid embryos do not differ from control Xenopus → (Xenopus) nuclear-transplant embryos either cytologically, or in any autoradiographically detectable aspect of DNA or RNA synthesis. Labeled RNA appears in the cytoplasm of the hybrids at stage 9, as in normal development. The biochemical analysis of the hybrid embryos shows that high molecular weight and 4 S RNA synthesis is first detected at the usual developmental stages. Ribosomal RNA is not synthesized by arrested hybrids. The 4 S RNA synthesized by Discoglossus nuclei in Xenopus cytoplasm, and subsequently methylated in the hybrid embryos, appears chromatographically normal. Relative to 4 S RNA, less high molecular weight RNA is synthesized in the hybrid embryos than in Xenopus → (Xenopus) controls. The pattern of RNA synthesis in hybrids is seen to be abnormal several hours before developmental arrest, and may be causally connected with it." @default.
