- W2071776183 abstract "Normal distribution of the receptors for the lectins peanut agglutinin (PNA) and Helix pomatia agglutinin A (HPA) on the surface of motile and nonmotile thymus and spleen lymphocytes that had spontaneously formed a uropod in vitro were studied by immunofluorescence and immunoferritin electron microscopy. The cells were fixed with aldehydes, treated in most cases with neuraminidase to unmask the receptors, and labeled with the lectins. The majority of the receptors for both lectins on polarized thymocytes and on thymus-derived spleen lymphocytes (either in the presence or absence of colchicine) were segregated on the uropod, and were strongly depleted from the front of the cell. The same pattern was observed on granulocytes and some plasma cells. The ferritin distribution on the uropod was discontinuous and loosely patchy. As suggested by cocapping experiments, PNA and HPA labeled the same segregating molecules on the uropod. These results, together with previous observations on the redistribution of concanavalin A receptors to the front of the cell of motile lymphocytes and granulocytes suggest the existence of structural differences between some classes of plasma membrane molecules and between different domains of the plasma membrane of polarized leukocytes." @default.
