- W2071871569 abstract "The purpose of this note is to present the recent observation of the details of the process of breakage and fragmentation of highly porous char particles burning in regime I. It started as local fragmentation from the center of the particle, developed and eventually broke the particle into two. One-half of the two fragments broke into another two. The experiment was conducted in an electrodynamic chamber (EDC), where the particle was irradiated vertically by a CO{sub 2} laser beam from its bottom, creating an uneven temperature field. The dc voltage, responsible for the levitation of the particle, is proportional to the vector sum of the particle`s weight, photophoretic, and free convection forces. The three forces were uncoupled by periodical interruption of the laser. From the continuous measurement of the dc voltage and also photography, results were obtained as a sequence of shadowgraphs depicting the changing shape of a Spherocarb particle (synthetic char, diam. initially 205 {micro}m) at various conversions, when oxidized in air at 780 K. In this study, there was no observation of disintegration of the whole particle into fine fragments, contrary to Kerstein and Niksa`s observation that carbon samples fragmented into very fine particles at a critical porositymore » of 50--85%. In other words, fragmentation in this study happened step by step, breaking the weak part of the particle, with consequent breakage. Two mechanisms are suggested, both involving nonuniformity in a particle`s macroporosity.« less" @default.
