- W2072050081 abstract "Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) is a widely used food additive that causes toxic damage in several rodent organs including mouse lung. Studies show that BHT induces reversible acute pulmonary toxicity that includes alveolar type I cell necrosis followed by a repair process involving proliferation of type II, endothelial, and interstitial cells. While noncarcinogenic itself, BHT administered by various routes modulates the actions of several genotoxic agents, either by enhancing or inhibiting the magnitude of their effects. The formation and growth of carcinogeninduced lung tumors can be either inhibited or enhanced by BHT, depending on the schedule of carcinogen and BHT administration and on the strain and age of the mice.
