- W2072313682 abstract "The conclusion of Klassen et al. [ [1] Klassen T.P. Pham B. Lawson M.L. Moher D. For randomized controlled trials, the quality of reports of complementary and alternative medicine was as good as reports of conventional medicine. J Clin Epidemiol. 2005; 58: 763-768 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (44) Google Scholar ] that “the overall quality of reporting of RCTs of CAM interventions is as good as that for CM interventions” might have been more accurate had the word “good” been replaced with its polar opposite, considering that the overwhelming majority of both types of trial failed to report on allocation concealment. Moreover, it is hard to know what to make of such a conclusion, given the problem of grouping all complementary medicines together into one group and likewise grouping all conventional medicines together into another group. How, for example, would trials of acupuncture compare to those of herbal therapies? Even if a group of trials, say of acupuncture, could be found that were of uniformly high quality, what would this say about the next acupuncture trial? Is one to now “accept” such a trial with less scrutiny on the basis of its belonging to the select group? Group membership does not confer quality to the next trial of that same type; rather, each trial is a distinct entity, with its own level of quality, and so each trial would need to be evaluated on its own merits. Also, what can we conclude about the merits of the trials considered by Klassen et al. [ [1] Klassen T.P. Pham B. Lawson M.L. Moher D. For randomized controlled trials, the quality of reports of complementary and alternative medicine was as good as reports of conventional medicine.
