- W2072427958 abstract "The discovery of the hydrated electron and its observation by spectroscopic methods are briefly treated. In addition some physical properties, reactions and applications of the hydrated electron are discussed. Through use of the optical absorption band in the visible and infrared part of the spectrum, the generation of the hydrated electron by pulsed electron beams, by steady-state irradiation with 60Co gamma-rays, by photolysis and from hydrogen atoms may be studied. With its high molar extinction coefficient of 15,800 M−1 cm−1 at 7200 A, the physical properties and chemical reactions of the hydrated electron may be investigated in the concentration range from 10−5 to 10−9 M. Reactions of the hydrated electron with the species of irradiated water, with inorganic ions, and with organic molecules vary from diffusion controlled rates for certain free radicals to about 10−9 of this rate for water. Its natural half life in water is 780 μsec and because of the interconversion of hydrated electrons and H atoms in alkaline solution, its lifetime in alkaline solution is much longer. Applications of these properties and reactions of the hydrated electron to submicromolar chemical analysis and to low level pulsed radiation dosimetry are possible." @default.
