- W2072772083 abstract "The preparation and some of the properties of a sodium ion stimulated adenosine-triphosphatase from rat brain are described. The adenosinetriphosphatase is obtained in the microsomal fraction. 0.1 M concentrations of sodium ions cause a stimulation of the adenosinetriphosphate-splitting activity of the enzyme. Similar concentrations of potassium ions are ineffective in this respect. Lower concentrations of sodium ions cause less stimulation, and thus the stimulation caused by 0.01 M Na+ is just detectable. Potassium together with sodium does not alter the effect of the last mentioned ion. The enzyme is completely dependent on the presence of Mg++ ions. The findings are interpreted to mean that the microsomal particles, which are very likely fragments of the cell membrane, contain the active sodium-transport mechanism of this structure. The hydrolysis of adenosinetriphosphate is coupled to a reaction with Na+ in a mandatory fashion, and the former reaction cannot proceed in the absence of Na+ ions. The implications of these findings in the study of active transport mechanisms in cellular membranes are discussed." @default.
