Observation of the transient 4.3 μ fluorescence arising from this level following application of a Q-spoiled 10.6 μ pulse to a CO 2 cell was the method employed. The experimental set-up was tested by measuring known relaxation times in CO 2 and CO 2 –N 2 mixtures. Using this technique a measured value for the CO 2 –CO energy transfer rate is given. The discharge effect on the level of 4.3 μ fluorescence and deexcitation rate of the (00°1) level was investigated and found to be significant. In particular, the electron role is comparable to molecular collisions in (00°1) relaxation. A quantum-mechanical calculation of electron excitation and deexcitation is included in an appendix." @default.
