- W2072840982 abstract "Complete iron balance studies were carried out in 34 experiments on 21 patients, who received orally a ferro- or ferri-salt in a dose of 250 mg Fe labeled with 5 μC 59Fe. Eighteen patients received ferrous chloride, in ten of these patients also ferri versenate was given in alternating succession. Three other patients were given ferrous citrate and a week before or after this experiment ferri citrate. The mean urinary excretion of the different iron salts was always less than 1%. There appeared to be a large variation of the utilization expressed as a percent-age of the absorption (between 0 and 100%). Even a significant negative correlation was found between absorption and utilization as a percentage of the absorbed iron. Therefore the often used radioiron red cell method as a determination of the absorption appeared to be unreliable, especially if iron was given in a therapeutic dose. Furthermore, we found that the absorption of some ferri-salts was equal to that of ferro-salts but the utilization of ferri- was less than of ferro-salts." @default.
