- W2072886773 abstract "The precise interpretation of Ward identities (and their anomalies) involving a current operator not belonging to some renormalizable theory can still be considered an open problem in quantum field theory. Therefore the most simple example, the Ward identity for the axial current in meson-nucleon dynamics is reinvestigated in lowest order using finite local field operators and Wilson's short distance expansions. The boson field is treated as external. No anomaly arises in the Heisenberg picture. If the perturbation theory calculation is repeated in the interaction picture a commutator is encountered which has to be finite. Neither the canonical nor the Bjorken-Johnson-Low prescription provide a consistent (i.e. finite) value for this commutator. A possible remedy for this difficulty is proposed within the framework of the approach of finite field operators furnishing a satisfactory answer. We conclude that the Heisenberg picture is more adequate for the investigation of Ward identities with Wilson techniques while the usual Feynman perturbation methods are probably less reliable." @default.
