- W2072912244 abstract "Physical inactivity has been linked with the pediatric obesity epidemic; however few longitudinal studies have assessed the underlying factors in the physical activity (PA) decline. PURPOSE: To investigate the decline in MVPA with age in a longitudinal study of Latina & African American (AA) females. METHODS: Data from the first 5 assessments from the Transitions Study, an observational study on factors contributing to the decline in PA seen in minority female youth, are presented here. PA was assessed every 4 months via accelerometry. Pubertal Tanner stage was assessed yearly. Inclusion criteria were at least one annual pubertal measure and ≥ 4 days (10 hr/day) of accelerometry data for at least one PA assessment. Growth curve modeling was used to investigate the effect of age, ethnicity, and Tanner stage on mean min/day in MVPA (using age-specific count thresholds) adjusting for visit. All analyses were conducted in SAS v.9.1 Proc MIXED using 2-sided tests (a= 0.05) with random intercepts, restricted maximum likelihood estimates, and assuming equal residual variance and an unstructured covariance matrix. RESULTS: 62 females (mean age 9.3 yrs (SD= 1.0); 71.4% Latina) were included at baseline, where Latinas recorded fewer mean min/day of MVPA than AA (41.6 vs. 59.2; p= 0.107). Mean min/day in MVPA declined over time (b= -2.5 (SE= 0.9); p= 0.005). Increasing age was significantly associated with decreasing MVPA over the 2 years (b= -6.1 (SE= 2.7); p= 0.025). While there was a trend for Latinas spending fewer min/day in MVPA over time (p= 0.089), the sample size precluded stratified analysis. In this sample, Tanner stage was not significantly related to declines in PA (p= 0.973). CONCLUSIONS: There is strong evidence for a decline in MVPA with over time independent of ethnicity and pubertal status in minority youth. Age is a salient factor in this decline. Latina girls spent less time in MVPA than AA girls, a difference that may persist into puberty, however these ethnic variations need to be further explored. This is one of the first studies to document the sharp longitudinal decline in MVPA levels in minority females. Interventions in this group may need to start at early age and possibly be tailored to specific ethnicities.
