- W2072980236 abstract "Cancer patients are increasingly using the internet to inform themselves. It is essential for oncologists to understand the quality of the information patients access to improve patient education. A small number of studies have looked at the quality of internet resources; however none of these have used a validated tool to examine the quality of resources for multiple malignancies. Our aim is to systematically evaluate the quality of websites intended to provide lung, breast, colorectal, melanoma and ovarian cancer patients with disease specific information. The terms “lung cancer”, “breast cancer”, “ovarian cancer”, “colorectal cancer” and “melanoma” were used to retrieve hits from the search engine Google and the meta-search engines Dogpile and Yippy. A list of the “top 100” websites for each malignancy was compiled using pre-specified inclusion and exclusion criteria. A validated evaluation tool was used to analyze administration, accountability, authorship, site organization, readability, content and accuracy. Inter-rater reliability was analyzed. Results were evaluated with descriptive statistics. The first 1500 hits for each malignancy (7500 total) were recorded. A list of the “top 100 websites” was compiled for each of the five cancer types (500 total). 87% (435/500) of websites disclosed ownership, sponsorship and/or advertising. While authorship was identified in 43% (219/500) of websites, only 17/100 colorectal sites identified the author. Credentials were identified in 36% (180/500) of all websites and similar across malignancies. Sources were cited in 46% (230/500) of all websites, with only 29% (140/500) referencing ≥ 3 sources. 46% of all websites were last updated within 4 years and only 23/100 colorectal sites were recently updated. The Flesch-Kincaid grade level for readability was 9.8 across all websites, with ovarian sites written at the highest grade level (11). Most websites provided information on symptoms (91%, 455/500) but a minority covered prognosis (23%, 115/500). While most websites contained accurate information (71%, 355/500), there were inaccuracies in ovarian cancer information (30/100 accurate). This study is the largest review of cancer patient information websites using a validated evaluation tool. Many websites are available for cancer patients yet the quality of resources is variable and there are concerning deficits. While many websites are accurate, few cite sources, authors or their credentials. Websites often include information about symptoms but a minority discuss prognosis. The average readability is high and may not be appropriate. This information can help oncologists to tailor discussions with cancer patients, addressing potential gaps, guiding patients to quality websites and developing new resources." @default.
