- W2073014328 abstract "1. Unbound or free hormone in plasma is biologically active while the protein-bound fraction serves as a reservoir and transport form. The biologically active 17 β -hydroxylsteroids are largely bound to a specific β -globulin and albumin. 2. Since variations in the fraction of the hormone which is unbound could influence the expression of biological activity, we have used a method of equilibrium dialysis to measure the per cent binding of two important androgens, testosterone and 5 α -dihydrotestosterone. This is an in vitro method done at three plasma dilutions. 3. For both hormones, the per cent binding for normal men is significantly lower than that for normal women at each dilution. The values for women with hirsutism range from low normal male to high normal female. The levels of binding were elevated in hyperthyroid patients without treatment, men receiving estrogen, pregnant women and women receiving oral contraceptives." @default.
