- W2073047229 abstract "Citrus is a major horticultural crop worldwide and is relatively salt sensitive. Salt damage usually manifests as leaf burn and defoliation, and is associated with accumulation of toxic levels of Na+ and/or Cl− in leaf cells. Factors affecting tree response to salinity are documented, including salinity levels for onset and rate of yield decline in mature trees. The review is primarily concerned with the regulation of Na+ and Cl− concentrations in leaves, stems and roots. Fruits are also considered, but are weaker sinks for Na+ and Cl− compared to leaves. The greater salt resistance of rootstocks, such as Rangpur lime and Cleopatra mandarin, is associated with their capacity to limit the accumulation of Cl− in leaves. Other rootstocks, like trifoliate orange, demonstrate a capacity to restrict Na+ transport to the shoot at low salinity. The traits which restrict root to shoot transport of Cl− and Na+ in citrus have been shown to be heritable. Sodium and Cl− concentrations in leaves are modulated by both the scion and rootstock although the rootstock has the greatest influence. The regulation of leaf Cl− concentrations in citrus appears to be primarily associated with transport processes in the root, e.g. root uptake and unloading of Cl− at the root symplast/xylem interface. The capacity of rootstocks, such as trifoliate orange, to limit Na+ accumulation in leaves is associated with reabsorption of Na+ from the xylem stream in the root and basal stem. The extent of recycling of Na+ back to the root is unknown in citrus. Equally, the importance of transpirational by-pass flows, which may also differentiate rootstocks into high and low Cl− accumulating genotypes, is discussed but remains unresolved. The role of root anatomy and morphology is considered in relation to pathways of water and ion uptake, and concepts of cellular ion transport in citrus roots are reviewed." @default.
