- W2073148049 abstract "A previous study determined that a 3 MET moderate intensity cut point (CP) corresponded to an activity energy expenditure (AEE, kcals/kg/min) of 0.031 in normal weight adults (CPNW). It is not known whether this relationship holds true in overweight/obese adults, nor how a different AEE CP would Influence the interpretation of free-living activity monitor data. PURPOSE: This study determined the Influence of a population-specific moderate intensity CP on the analysis of free-living hip and wrist activity monitor data. METHODS: Subjects included 17 African-American women (Mean±SD: 46±9 yrs, 34.6±6.9 kg/m2), 15 of whom were classified as overweight/obese. Subjects performed 10 structured activities that included sitting and house cleaning tasks, occupational tasks, and 3 speeds of walking while wearing a portable metabolic system on a vest to measure VO2. Each activity was performed for 5 mins while an additional 10 mins preceded all activities to estimate sitting RMR. Next, subject wore accelerometry-based activity monitors on the wrist and hip for 3 days. Mean metabolic data for each activity were converted to AEE (Activity EEIJ - RMRJ) and METs ((VO2, ml/kg/ min)/3.5). Using linear regression, the new AEE CP corresponding to 3 METs (CPNEW) was calculated. Raw activity monitor data were converted into units of AEE using a validated algorithm, processed using both CPNW and CPNEW, then summarized as mean mins (TMV, min/day) of MVPA in 1 and 10 min bouts. Mean TMV values at each bout duration (1 and 10 mins) and monitor location (hip and wrist) were compared using a 2-factor RMANOVA. RESULTS: Using the newly determined AEE CPNEW = 0.0385 kcals/kg/min, both CPNEW and CPNEW were applied to the activity data. TMV at 1 min bouts for both hip (Mean±SE: 105±10 vs 74±9 mins/day) and wrist monitors (171±15 vs 99±10) were significantly higher using CPNW than CPNEW (P<0.05). TMV at 10 min bouts between CPNW than CPNEW for the hip monitor were similar (6±2 vs 5±2), while TMV for CPNW (20±4) at the wrist remained significantly higher than that for CPNEW (6±2; P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Use of CPNW to analyze activity data collected on overweight/obese adults will tend to over predict MVPA variables, such as TMV, when compared to use of the newly derived CPNEW for overweight/obese adults. The results were consistent for both hip and wrist activity monitors." @default.
