- W2073162573 abstract "The fineness of detail visible in an X-ray photograph depends on the size of the focal spot and on the relative positions of spot, subject and recording emulsion. In normal conditions of radiography it is hardly possible to distinguish detail smaller than mm, but there are two methods by which higher resolution may be obtained. Either the subject is placed close to the emulsion at a distance from the spot, and the negative subsequently enlarged optically; or the subject is brought close to a minute source of X rays, so that an image magnified by simple geometrical projection is received on the emulsion at some distance. The first method has been developed recently by Engstrom and others (1950), using fine-grained emulsions, to give a resolution of about 1 μ. The alternative method has been investigated in this laboratory by Dr. W. C. Nixon and myself (1951), using electron microscope techniques to produce a sufficiently fine focal spot, the size of which is the primary limiting factor on resolution. Using magnetic electron lenses and a continuously pumped tube, resolutions below 1 μ have already been obtained, approaching that of the best light microscope. Some of the biological applications were illustrated in the exhibition at the 1952 Congress of the British Institute of Radiology; the purpose of this note is to direct attention to the possibilities and limitations of the method." @default.
