- W2073308191 abstract "The applications of physics to medicine are reviewed and the responsibilities of the physicist in the three areas of radiological physics (radiotherapy, diagnostic radiology, and nuclear medicine) are outlined. The main part of the paper deals with the applications of accelerators in medicine, in particular radiotherapy and isotope production. For radiotherapy, a brief review of the history of the use of various types of accelerators in therapy is given and then a number of problems including beam shaping, neutron measurements around accelerators, and electron beam measurements are discussed as examples of the application of physics to cancer treatment. The physical and biological factors are then considered which may result in an advantage of neutrons, pions, or other heavy charged particles in (with respect to) cancer therapy over X-rays or electrons and a brief outline of work already underway in this area is presented. The production of isotopes by cyclotrons is then discussed. The advantage that these isotopes might have and a list of typical procedures that might be performed with them is given." @default.
