• W2073508001 abstract "Abstract Protons with energy in the region of 2.5 MeV have been passed through single crystals of copper, 10 μm in thickness and their energy spectrum analysed by a solid-state detector. The angular spread of the proton beam was less than ±0.06° and when it was incident within ±1° of the 〈110〉 axis of the crystal the energy spectrum showed that a distinct group of particles came through, with about one half the normal energy loss. This is interpreted as further evidence of the channeling effect in Cu, and is compared with previous experiments in which the effect of orientation on the Cu(p,n)Zn reaction was studied 8 ). The effect of several solid-state parameters on the channelled group of protons has been investigated. First the temperature was altered in the range 180°–520°K and the channelling was found to decrease with increasing temperature. The variations seem in accord with current theories which relate the changes to lattice vibration amplitudes. Next the crystal was damaged by irradiating with 1.5 MeV protons at a temperature below 190°K to a dose sufficient to make more than 1% of the atoms suffer displacement, though at this temperature the retained percentage of point defects must be much less than this. The channelled fraction was reduced by 20%, which seems to indicate that radiation damage introduces a channel-blocking effect. An order-of-magnitude estimate predicts the correct magnitude for this observation." @default.
