- W2073607527 abstract "Tiny extra weights (brass nuts) were placed or removed from the thorax of ‘nectar’-collecting workers of the honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) while they foraged for sugar solution in a patch of artificial flowers. The weights could be added singly, so as to increase the rate at which weight was gained during nectar-collecting independently of crop volume. Extra weights could also be removed so as to keep the bee at a more or less constant total weight while collecting more and more nectar. I investigated whether departure for the hive, before a full crop is obtained (as repeatedly reported in the literature) is due to the effect of an increasing weight of the load. The results did not suggest straightforward effects of an increasing load weight (or crop volume). Rather, it is likely that bees take into account their cumulative metabolic expenditures while exploiting the patch, in the present case irrespective of the temporal pattern of carrying extra loads." @default.
