- W2073624590 abstract "Abstract Paleofaults of the North Tethyan margin in the Carpathians are generally hidden by flysch nappes. The Przemysl `sigmoid' is an S-shaped change in strike (virgation) of the fold axes and thrust fronts of some Carpathian flysch units, together with a westerly termination of the outermost units. Several models have suggested that the formation of this sigmoid is due to a difference in motion of two parts of the Skole flysch unit during nappe emplacement over the Miocene rocks of the Stebnik unit. The Stebnik unit has been considered as an obstacle dragged out during nappe emplacement or uplifted along a NE-striking, NW-dipping Late Miocene fault. Satellite images have given us an opportunity to carry out observations on a regional scale. Using a Landsat Multi Spectral Scanner (MSS) image, we have identified an E-striking Wistok fault line in the autochthonous foredeep basin and, in the Skole unit, a change in landscape across an ill-defined NE-trending line. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) of the European Remote Sensing (ERS) satellite images mainly emphasize geomorphologic features. They have clearly shown that a regional lateral lithofacies change can be observed in the Skole unit from alternate clayey and gritty flysch levels in the southeast, to massive gritty flysch in the northwest, across the NE-trending line. We interpret this line to be linked to a SE-dipping Przemysl paleofault located in the North Tethyan margin, affecting the Skole flysch basin at least during the Cretaceous. The Przemysl paleofault has not only controlled the Cretaceous paleogeography (lithofacies change in the Skole unit) but also the Burdigalian–Badenian paleogeography, forming the western boundary of the Stebnik basin. The development of the sigmoid results from a difference in motions around the obstacle formed by the Stebnik unit which was uplifted by basin inversion during the orogenesis. The NE-striking faulting indirectly responsible for the Przemysl sigmoid is a long-lived (at least Cretaceous to Burdigalian) feature of this part of the North Tethyan margin." @default.
