- W2073670533 abstract "Obesity in children has been an important health problem in the U.S. Obesity can lead to multiple medical problems such as hypertension, diabetes, and gallstones in adults. There have been several different studies conducted, related to gallstones and its causes. However, there are limited studies in adolescents. The purpose of the study is to find out if teenagers with a higher BMI are more susceptible to have gallstones compared to those with lower BMI. The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board at Driscoll Children's Hospital and was performed in adolescents (age 13-19years ) . The subjects were separated into two subgroups. Group 1 (control group) were healthy student volunteers from middle and high school with a BMI < 30. Group 2 (test group) were subjects with a BMI > or equal to 30 who were enrolled in a Weight Loss Program at Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas. Gallbladder ultrasounds were conducted in both groups by a registered sonographer and interpreted by a board certified radiologist. The control group (BMI<30) had 30 subjects and the test group ( BMI > or equal to 30) had 76 subjects. The average BMI in the control group was 21.4, and the average BMI in the test group was 45.4. 0 out of the 30 subjects (0%) in the control group had gallstones/sludge. 9 out of the 76 subjects (11.8%) in the test group were diagnosed with gallstones/sludge. Standard statistical analysis was performed with Pearson's chi-square test. Statistical significance was noted with p value of < 0.001. Obese adolescents, like the adult population, are at a higher risk for multiple medical problems related to obesity. Our study suggests that obese adolescents are at a higher risk of developing gallstones. Gallbladder ultrasounds should be part of the evaluation for obese teenagers with abdominal pains." @default.
