- W2073678325 abstract "How often do we hear students complain that they are not given adequate class time to speak English? How often do we, as teachers and administrators, try to correct this deficiency by scheduling free discussions and by breaking classes down into small groups so that each individual student will have ample opportunity to speak in an unstructured way? Most teachers will find that these or similar thoughts cross their minds fairly frequently, and when these feelings do enter teachers' minds, those teachers are perpetuating what we have chosen to call free conversation myth. This article draws upon recent psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic research to demonstrate that in a domestic ESL program, class time devoted to having foreign students talk in a totally free and unstructured way is wasted. It is not the case that foreign students in this country have no opportunity to speak outside of class. In fact, whenever they leave the classroom to go shopping, to go to lunch, or to speak with other ESL students who do not speak their own language, they are engaging in When they tell their teachers why their homework is late, when they order food in a restaurant, or when they ask directions of someone on the street, they are receiving conversation practice. Encouraging them to engage in more unfocused conversation in class not only robs students of valuable instructional time, but does not even teach fluency, since such discussions are usually dominated by students who are already adequately fluent. What we are advocating is an approach which we call directed conversation. This approach combines aspects of dramatic play-acting with a functional approach toward the teaching of sociolinguistic speech behavior for specific types of real-world encounters. This technique forces students to learn not only the vocabulary and expressions necessary for one restricted type of situation, but also capitalizes on well-established cognitive abilities to analogize and generalize into parallel social and linguistic situations, thereby facilitating the acquisition of both linguistic and sociolinguistic rules." @default.
