- W2074443816 abstract "Sixty-five odontomas diagnosed among 21,609 patients at a clinic of oral surgery during one decade were examined. Clinical and radiographic characteristics were registered as well as pathological sequels. The majority, 44 (68%), were compound odontomas and 20 (31%) were complex. The most common location was in the lower premolar region with 15 (23%) odontomas, followed by the upper incisor region with 13 (20%) and the upper and lower canine region with 10 (15%) each. Twenty-one cases (32%) were detected after the age of twenty. Twenty-seven (42%) of the patients were females and 38 (58%) males. The dominating pathological sequel was dyseruption of neighbouring teeth in 33 patients (51%), mainly in the upper anterior region. One impacted tooth had developed a dentigerous cyst. Five odontomas (8%) were combined with aplasia of a permanent tooth. Malposition occurred in three patients and diastema in two. Five patients exhibited malformed neighbouring teeth. Five patients had pain. Two of them also had inflammatory swelling. The prevalence of pathological sequels from odontomas (70%) was higher than from supernumerary teeth (42%). The percentage of serious sequels such as pain, dyseruption, dislocation and malformation of neighbours was 59% compared to 22%. Odontomas appeared to be more harmful than supernumerary teeth." @default.
