- W2074533718 abstract "This study looks at the current provision of environmental education in Melbourne government secondary schools. Data for this purpose were collected from a survey of all government secondary schools in the Melbourne metropolitan area. The results show that across Melbourne only a small number of schools offer VCE Environmental Studies in Years 11 and 12, and a smaller number offer electives or separate subjects in environmental education at the junior year levels. Teaching of environmental education is mainly left to units in Science and Geography, though not all schools provide environmental education in these subjects. The provision of environmental education as a separate area of study is much stronger in lower socioeconomic status areas. This, it is argued, is partly related to the dominance of the academic curriculum and the push in middle class areas of Melbourne to focus on subjects which have high purchase value in the competition for higher education places. If schools are to be more effective in providing programmes for allyoung people in such importantareas as the environment then the way we provide such programmes or teaching may have to be reconsidered." @default.
