- W2074698901 abstract "Summary 1 Eight experiments with 2 groups of 9 pigs (9 castrated males and 9 females), 20.5 to 25.7 kg initial weight were performed in a large indirect calorimeter equipped with two identical pens. In each pen 9 animals were housed for periods of 14 to 17 days. The air compositions tested were: high ammonia and high relative humidity, high ammonia and low relative humidity, low ammonia and high relative humidity and low ammonia and low relative humidity. The levels tested were: high ammonia 53–71 ppm, low ammonia 17–25 ppm, high relative humidity 84–91% and low relative humidity 51–63%. On each air composition 2 experiments were performed. Feeding level was kept constant at about 1120kJ metabolisable energy/kg0.75 day. Gaseous exchange was measured in periods of 48 hr. Posture of animals (standing, sitting or lying) was recorded during 2.5 hr each day when gaseous exchange was measured. 2 Heat production, energy-balance and derived maintenance requirement was different between replicates. When ammonia was high energy balance was higher. 3 Body weight gain was reduced in the experiments with high relative humidity. 4 Activity was reduced in the experiments with high ammonia. @default.
