- W2074705308 abstract "This paper deals with motivation for treatment, with those operations which occur in the patient prior to the formal inception of the therapeutic process, and upon which the success of the process appears contingent. A concept of a “non-adapted state” is proposed which is viewed as the universal substratum of illness, the raw material out of which the notion of illness is constructed. This state may be described as existing in a person with the subjective experience of distress and the objective evidence of disability; it involves no presumptions as to etiology. Education in a theory of illness transforms the behavior of a person suffering in the “non-adapted state” into that of a “sick” person. This theory provides an explanation of the origins of the “non-adapted state,” and of the means for its resolution. Furthermore, it defines an appropriate attitude toward the “non-adapted state” which consists of a conviction of undesirability, a feeling of personal helplessness, and a belief in the possibility of help by a culturally defined expert." @default.
