- W2074808840 abstract "We consider nucleon-nucleus scattering and show that the process is not well understood even in some qualitative features. We show formally that there are many phase shifts, and corresponding optical potentials, which fit the best currently available experimental data. Only by using “intuitive/rd or “physical” ideas can we obtain reasonably well defined optical potentials and yet these potentials do not fit the data within the experimental accuracy. We illustrate the problem by considering proton scattering from 16O near 30 MeV bombarding energy. We find in our example that we cannot decide whether the absorption in S-states is very low or rather high or has an intermediate value. Arguments based on simplicity of the potential would suggest an intermediate value for the S-state absorption but we present a simple plane-wave calculation which suggests a very low value. Also certain features of the phase shifts we obtain by fitting the experimental data are inconsistent with the assumption of a smoothly varying potential. We show how double polarisation measurements, Wolfenstein's R-parameter, would remove these difficulties to a substantial extent and we see no other way by which our understanding of this apparently simple process can be increased." @default.
