- W2074833418 abstract "A microelectrode technique was used to investigate the potential difference across the epithelial cells of the cornea. This potential was found to be negative and increased as the microelectrode penetrated through the epithelium, the maximum value being obtained at an average depth of 53 μ ± 1 μ. On penetrating the stroma, the potential dropped sharply, but still remained negative. A positive potential was never obtained. Attempts to extend the measurement of the potential to the interior of the stroma were not successful with the present technique. The magnitude of the maximum potential increased with time after enucleation. It increased on cooling and returned to the normal level when warmed. The finding that the potential of the stroma immediately underlying the epithelium is negative with respect to the tear film is in contrast with the measurements obtained by Potts and Modrell (1957), Donn, Maurice and Mills (1959), and Friedman and Kupfer (1960), using other techniques. Probable reasons for these differences are discussed." @default.
