Children's literature holds great potential for fostering moral growth when it is used by teachers who understand how moral judgment develops. The key to this statement, however, lies in the ability of a teacher to deal with this subject and, no less, the desire to tackle it. Does the teacher care about fostering moral growth in his/her students and, if so, does that teacher have the necessary understanding and exper tise? Probably more crucial is the ques tion of whether, indeed, development of moral judgment is within the juris diction of teachers of reading or even tax-supported schools. This is a matter for serious philosophical con sideration and could be a thorny issue. Disagreement, however, does not mean that we should ignore the myriad possibilities that children's literature presents for guided discus sion of moral dilemmas. For teachers who might want to explore the use of literature with moral themes and for those who" @default.
