- W2074865332 abstract "Abstract Sexism pervades all aspects of Australian cities, from their spatial structure and distribution of urban resources, to the male-dominated planning process itself. Planning decisions based on outmoded sexist attitudes and assumptions concerning women's role in society have created cities which place women at a disadvantage, restrict their access to urban resources, and reinforce their subordinate position in society and the female stereotype; they tend to ignore recent social, demographic and economic changes which have dramatically changed the family structure and women's roles, especially women's growing economic independence due to greater participation in the paid workforce. This paper analyses the urban constraints on women's access to urban resources and women's changing needs in the urban environment, leading to urban policy proposals intended to accomodate and facilitate women's new social and economic role and break down existing spatial barriers; to produce non-sexist cities which would give men and women more equal access to urban resources. In discussing major areas of concern to women in the urban environment, the emphasis is on employment as the key to social and economic well being. Women's access to employment is seen to be greatly influenced by access to other urban resources—housing, transport, child care and community support service and amenities." @default.
