- W2074882373 abstract "Dominick Grundy’s thoughtful paper “What is a Writing Group” opens up a new dimension of the writing process by exploring the writing group as a facilitator of creative activity and describing the psychodynamics involved in its functioning. Grundy suggests that the proliferation of writing groups reflects their powerful function in supporting the struggling writer. Grundy further argues that these groups work best when the leader is therapeutically skilled and able to address the material both at conscious and unconscious levels. After Ogden (1994), Grundy notes that writing is, paradoxically, a solitary process in which the writer is engaged with the other, the reader. On one hand, the reader takes in and recognizes the writer through the act of reading her or his words. Yet, the reader inevitably “makes over” the writer’s words in line with her own perspective, thereby transforming, and in that sense, negating, the writer (Benjamin, 2000). There is an inherent dialectical tension between recognition and the breakdown of recognition inherent in being" @default.
