- W2074981314 abstract "Abstract Hindbrain specimens were obtained from 38 cats between 1 and 60 days of age after in situ perfusion with formaldehyde. Deslanoside, a digitalis glycoside, was injected intraperitoneally in 17 of the cats to determine the age of onset of drug-evocable vomiting. Each emetic test constituted a terminal experiment. The vomiting response became elicitable between the third and fourth weeks of age. Observations were made on the maturation of the area postrema and surrounding structures in order to correlate a morphological condition with the development of emetic responsiveness. Tissue sections were stained for blood vessels, cells, nerve fibers, and myelin. The vascular and cellular characteristics of the area postrema were found in the newborn to be essentially the same as in the adult. However, innervation of the area postrema developed most rapidly in conjunction with the appearance of chemically induced vomiting. The area postrema itself lacks myelin, and myelination in other regions of the lower medulla generally lagged behind the establishment of emetic evocability. It is concluded that the innervation of the area postrema is the final maturational step required for the elicitation of vomiting by deslanoside in the preweaned cat." @default.
