- W2075417628 abstract "The purpose of this research was to evaluate the relative impact of three different comparative standards on how people feel, specifically, social (normative), temporal (ipsative), and imaginary (idiothetic) ones. In previous research, we found that judgments based on each of these standards are highly related in a natural setting. Consequently, in the present studies we compared the impact of information based on each standard in a setting (academic performance) in which they could be experimentally unconfounded. In three studies we consistently found that each of the standards may impact how people feel, but that social comparisons have by far the strongest impact. We discuss how our approach can be used to compare these three standards in other contexts, but suggest that the dominant impact of social comparison on how people feel about their academic performance has important implications for education." @default.
