- W2075892502 abstract "Abstract Using as genetic markers the prophages λ, 21, and 186, it has been possible to study the production of P1 transducing particles (TP) in single bursts. It was found that TP and infectious particles are released from the same infected cells. Among the population of P1vir-infected cells as a whole, TP containing any one of the markers are produced in 0.5% of the cells. However, among those cells selected for producing a TP containing λ, 12% also produce a TP containing 21, and 5% also produce a TP containing 186. Cells containing the λ prophage integrated into a cytoplasmic fertility factor and the 21 prophage integrated into the bacterial chromosome were infected with P1; the percentage of cells producing TP containing λ that also produced TP containing 21 dropped to 3.2%. The chance that two markers which are too far apart to be cotransduced will be packaged in the same cell therefore increases with proximity of the markers. A model is proposed for the formation of P1 TPs: Packaging of host DNA is concentrated in a fraction of the infected bacteria. Approximately one-tenth of the infected cells contain several regions of localized, efficient packaging, each comprising 20% of the Escherichia coli chromosome." @default.
