- W2076001410 abstract "Arecently described cause of hyperprolactinemia is production of a circulating prolactin species with chemical and biologic properties different from native prolactin (macroprolactin) [l-7]. Patients with macroprolactin have been described as females, with regular menstrual periods, preserved fertility, and absence of pituitary abnormalities on computed tomographic (CT) or magnetic resonance (MRI) scans of the pituitary gland [l-7]. In contrast, women with the common form of hyperprolactinemia have menstrual disorders, infertility, and/or galactorrhea [g-lo]. Disorders of prolactin secretion are uncommon in males, in whom hyperprolactinemia may be associated with pituitary tumors or with a radiographically normal pituitary gland. Presenting symptoms of hyperprolactinemia in men include hypogonadism with impotence and decreased libido, rarely galactorrhea, headaches, and visual symptoms due to local effects of the pituitary tumor [B-14]. In the current report, we describe two men with hyperprolactinemia who had normal testicular function. Subsequent studies detected the presence of large amounts of macroprolactin in these subjects." @default.
