- W2076029911 abstract "The year 2011 has been designated as the International Year of Chemistry and it also marks the start of the second decade of ChemPhysChem. Before revealing what we are planning for 2011, we would like to provide a brief overview of the highs and, sadly, lows, of 2010. The undisputed highlight of 2010 was our 10-year-anniversary event held in Paris in May. On this day, attended by over 600 delegates, with a further several thousand watching the event online, we featured ten speakers, four of them Nobel Laureates. 1 1 1 1 1 1 For the few people who missed this event, it is not too late, though, as you can still connect and watch at http://www.chemistryviews.org/chem/holding/index.html. On this day, Wiley-VCH and ChemPubSoc Europe′s new online web service, ChemistryViews, was launched as well and can be accessed through http://www.chemistryviews.org. Pictures of the ten speakers on stage are provided on the next page. ChemPhysChem published several special issues in 2010 on protein cofactors, interfaces, electrochemistry and atmospheric chemistry. Issue 6, on protein cofactors (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/cphc.v11:6/issuetoc), contained contributions from Peter Hildebrandt, Klaus Schulten and Tilman Lamparter. The issue on interface phenomena (Issue 7) contained contributions by Klaus Christmann, Axel Groß, Rolf Schuster, Ulrich Stimming, among others, and can be viewed at http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/cphc.v11:7/issuetoc. Issue 13, a bumper issue on the active field of electrochemistry, and can be found at http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/cphc.v11:13/issuetoc and includes contributions by Bing-Wei Mao, Timo Jacob, Michael Grätzel and Richard Compton. With climate change on everybody′s minds these days, it is only appropriate that we also published an issue on atmospheric chemistry (Issue 18, http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/cphc.v11:18/issuetoc), including contributions from Hartmut Herrmann, Geert Moortgat, Mike Pilling and Markus Amman. Ever since its launch, ChemPhysChem has been growing steadily, both in submissions and in pages published, all the while never compromising on quality. In 2010 we received over 1000 submissions for the first time and we published 4107 pages, a 23 % increase over 2009! Unfortunately, 2010 also brought some misfortune. Two of our most valued board members, Bjorn Roos passed away in 2010. Bjorn Roos was with ChemPhysChem from the very beginning and Paul Barbara joined the board a bit later. Both contributed significantly to ChemPhysChem′s growth and development and we will sorely miss them. Looking forward to 2011, we are happy to announce that we have much in the pipeline to celebrate the International Year of Chemistry. One of the important themes this year is the participation of women in chemistry. On the cover and the inside cover of this issue, we feature papers where women are the principal authors. As only the best papers in each issue are considered for the cover, this is a clear indication that women are making their presence felt in physical chemistry. Continuing in the spirit of the International Year of Chemistry, we will publish some special issues in 2011 that touch on topics spanning the entire scope of physical chemistry. Our first special issue will be Issue 3 on FRET and soft matter, guest-edited by Erich Sackmann, Clemens Kaminsky and Klaus Schulten. Theodor Förster would have been 100 years old this year and it is his innovative work on fluorescence and energy transfer that paved the way for modern-day biophysical chemistry. This special issue is a tribute to his legacy. It also happens that 2011 marks hundred years since the death of Jacobus van′t Hoff, the first winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1901 for his work on chemical dynamics and osmotic pressure in solutions. He was also the first (with Joseph LeBel) to realize that the chemical bonds of tetra-valent carbon are directed towards the corners of a tetrahedron, an idea for which he was widely criticised at the time. We will celebrate the work of Van′t Hoff, and modern physical chemistry in general, in Issue 8, guest-edited by Michel Orrit and Ben Feringa. Another important tool in physical chemistry is the laser, which has been around for just over fifty years now and without which modern physical chemistry would be unthinkable. Issue 10 will be dedicated to laser chemistry and also to our Editorial Advisory Board member, Karl Kleinermanns, who turned 60 last year. This issue will be guest-edited by Rainer Weinkauf, Mattanjah de Vries and Klaus Müller-Dethlefs. Issue 17 will be about theoretical spectroscopy, electronic structure calculations and theoretical bonding analysis for (bio)organic and (bio)inorganic systems in the gas phase, in solution and on surfaces and will be guest-edited by Stefan Grimme and Markus Reiher. A big change in 2011 concerns our Editorial Advisory Board. At the end of 2010 many of our board members′ terms ended, and we thank them for supporting and promoting the journal during its early years. A special thank you goes to the two outgoing chairmen of the board, Frans de Schryver and Casey Hynes. Without their tireless efforts over the years, ChemPhysChem would not have been as successful. From this year on, our Editorial Advisory Board will be chaired by Christian Amatore, Michel Orrit and Michael Grätzel, who will guide ChemPhysChem into the future. They will be supported by the remaining members of the board as well as by 21 incoming members (Table 1).
