- W2076070444 abstract "ABSTRACT Conservation tillage in furrow-irrigated cropping systems has not been widely accepted by farmers. A significant limitation to the use of conservation tillage in furrow-irrigated conditions is likely a lack of knowledge about how to manage furrows that contain surface residue. Six wheat residue quantities ranging from no residue up to 11,200 kg/ha (10,000 lbs/acre) and three levels of clods were evaluated in two soils under simulated, furrow-irrigated conditions. Advance time and infiltration at the highest residue quantity were 77% and 17% higher in the sandy loam soil and 53% and 37% higher in the loam than in bare soil, respectively. Increasing soil clods increased infiltration 19% in the loam soil and 10% in the sandy loam soil, while advance time was increased 63% in the loam soil and 84% in the sandy loam soil. Increasing surface residue more than 4,000 kg/ha (3,570 lbs/acre) in the loam soil and 2,000 kg/ha (1,790 lbs/acre) in the sandy loam soil did not cause further reductions in sediment loss. Successful furrow irrigations under conservation tillage conditions will require fanners to balance infiltration and advance time, taking into account the added effects created by surface residue and soils clods.
