- W2076090209 abstract "Abstract Pi 2's recorded at a N-S array of stations between L = 3.8 and L = 2.4 in the U.K. were examined in relation to the secondary amplitude maximum which occurs at mid-latitudes. Recent development of the field line resonance theory by Hughes and Southwood (1976) was used as a test and was found to order a large number of the events into two groups which appear to represent resonance inside and outside the plasmasphere respectively. Those events where resonance is inside the plasmasphere occur before midnight, and have periods in the range 45–90 s. This period is inversely proportional to ∑ Kp for the preceding 24 h interval. By contrast those events whose resonance occurs beyond the plasmasphere occur post-midnight, contain periods in the range 35–60 s and their periods do not show any ∑ Kp dependence. The temporal distribution of the two groupings of Pi 's corresponds to the general transition at mid-latitudes from Pc4 to Pc3 regimes. The evidence suggests that the secondary amplitude maximum in Pi 's occurs in a narrow band of latitude which curves from L ∼- 3.5 pre-midnight to L ∼- 4.5 post-midnight. Further morphological associations with mid-latitude bays and auroral zone substorms suggest that ionospheric electric fields rather than magnetospheric conditions may control the localization of the events." @default.
