- W2076092565 abstract "PURPOSE: To determine the correlation between leg extensor strength and various measures of balance and function in older adults. METHODS: 19 men and women (60–68 y; 83.7 kg) were tested on the Timed Up and Go (TUG) and Activities-specific Balance Confidence (ABC) questionnaire. In addition, subjects performed static balance tests on a tri-axial force platform under conditions of two leg (TL), right leg only (RL), and left leg only (LL), in both the eyes open (EO) and eyes closed (EC) states. Length of the path of the center of pressure (LOP) was averaged for three 15-s trials in each of the six conditions. Leg extensor strength was determined via maximal isometric actions (3 attempts) of the knee and hip extensors in a modified power rack to accommodate a knee angle of 120°. Force was measured via a uniaxial force platform. Subjects were instructed to contract the muscles involved as hard and fast as possible for 3–4s. All analog data were digitally converted and stored for subsequent analysis using Datapac 2K2 (v3.17). All tests had a minimum intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.7 and coefficients of variation below 15%. RESULTS: Results are shown in table 1. Peak force was correlated (r = −.61, p<0.05) with TUG. Peak force of the leg extensor musculature was not correlated (p>.05) with other test measures.Table 1: R-values fore the correlations of strength and balance.CONCLUSION: Results suggest that an increase in lower body strength may lead to increased function. Because TUG was significantly correlated with strength, further research into the relationship of strength and balance is warranted. Sponsored by the Life Fitness Michael L. Pollock Memorial Grant, University of Memphis FRG and Power Systems, Inc." @default.
