- W2076132194 abstract "The structures of oxide glasses and of polymers are smilar in some aspects, however, not much is known about glasses containing the main structural groups simultaneously. The sol-gel process opens the possibility to produce such vitreous solids introducing compounds of the type RnSi(OR′)4-n into the starting mixture. The SiC bond is normally stable against hydrolysis and therefore the ligand R acts as a network modifier in the resulting structure. Many variations of this principle are possible: the ligand R can carry a functional group Y on the other end which influences the properties. If this group Y has the ability of polymerization, e.g. the vinyl group, then together with a further organic compound an additional cross-linking can be obtained. In this case the latter compound acts as an organic network former. Finally the Si atom can be replaced by related atoms, e.g. B or Ti and, of course, many mixtures are possible. Thus, a new group of vitreous materials can be produced, the so-called organically modified silicates (or abbreviated: ORMOSILs). Up to now only a few results are available. It is necessary to look in detail at the structures of these materials with incorporated organic components as organic network formers, sometimes also as organic network modifiers, in order to improve the possibilities in tailoring new glasses with predetermined properties." @default.
