- W2076144310 abstract "1592 BACKGROUND: The responsiveness of the oxidative metabolic system to square wave increases in the total energy demand (ΔÊ) has usually been quantified by a time-constant such as a mean response time (MRT). However, this method may not provide adequate differentiation of oxidative function when the asymptotic change in oxygen uptake (ΔVO2) is variable. PURPOSE: The specific aim of this study was to determine if normalization of ΔVO2 to MRT ([ΔVO2• MRT−1]) is a more robust index of oxygen uptake on-transition than MRT in individuals who have peripheral muscle oxygen extraction limitations. METHODS: Thirty-seven sedentary females, 12 with mild SLE, 10 HIV positive and 15 controls underwent two 6-min bouts of sub-maximal treadmill exercise tests at two ΔÊ of 3- and 5-METs. Oxygen consumption was continuously recorded during the bouts of treadmill walking. A two way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to examine the group by ΔÊ differences in MRT, ΔVO2 and ([ΔVO2• MRT−1]). RESULTS: At the lower ΔÊ of 3-Mets there was no significant intergroup difference in MRT, [ΔVO2• MRT−1], or ΔVO2. At the higher ΔÊ of 5-Mets intergroup differences in MRT and ΔVO2 were not observed. However, as ΔÊ increased from 3 to 5 METS, a significant increase in [ΔVO2• MRT−1] was observed in the control group (p<.0008). A significant ΔÊ −mediated increase in [ΔVO2 • MRT−1] was not observed in either the individuals with HIV or those with SLE. CONCLUSION: Both HIV infection and SLE result in peripheral limitation of the oxidative metabolic pathway and functional aerobic impairment is prevalent with both of these conditions. The results demonstrated that [ΔVO2• MRT−1] is a more robust indicator of oxidative metabolic dysfunction than MRT and ΔVO2 analyzed separately, in these individuals.
