- W2076178220 abstract "The principal point of controversy between the Drickamer-Frank-Slichter (DFS) theory and the Curie-Berry-Williams (CBW) theory, emphasized in the extended comment by Slichter and Drickamer (SD), is the proper application of the Franck-Condon (FC) principle to crystals under hydrostatic pressure. SD propose a specific model for the crystal plus the pressure apparatus: the crystal represented by one spring, the apparatus, by another, and analyze the coupled system in detail. The pressure apparatus in the SD model responds to the vibrations, relaxations, and optical transitions of the localized defect and thus does not apply constant pressure to the crystal. The coupled system does have, as noted by SD a hidden variable characterizing the pressure apparatus, a variable which must remain invariant during a FC transition. On the other hand, the CBW theory is based on a different, more generally valid model for which the inertia of the pressure apparatus is assumed large compared to that of the localized defect so that a constant pressure, $P$, is applied to the defect. In the CBW model the variable describing the state of the pressure apparatus is not hidden and is simply $P$, and the correct condition for the FC principle arising from the pressure is $ensuremath{Delta}P=0$, in accordance with our original paper. Finally, some aspects of the experimental situation are clarified." @default.
