- W2076214385 abstract "Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is associated with numerous cardiovascular, pulmonary, social and neurological sequelae. OSAS impacts the quality of life (QOL) of individuals as well as their morbidity and mortality. Common interventions for OSAS including surgery and nasal CPAP have not been shown to be effective for many individuals. No studies have focused on the efficacy of exercise training and diet on managing OSAS. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of such a program. Eight subjects (7♂, 1♀) diagnosed with OSAS consented to participate in this study. Mean age was 49 ± 9.5 years (x¯±SD). Polysomnographic and graded exercise tests were performed at onset and end of the study. QOL, daytime somnolence and mood states were assessed using the Health Status Questionnaire (HSQ), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and Profile of Mood States (POMS) outcome measures. All subjects participated in a exercise program 3×/week for 6 months, involving aerobic and strength training, in addition to receiving dietary counseling. Significant decreases were noted in total hypopneas (P ≤ .02) and in the apnea+hypopnea index (A&H Index) (P = .001). Significant improvements in mean sleep efficiency (P = .001) from 74.6% to 86.8%, and mean exercise training workloads (P = .009) were noted. Significant decreases (P ≤ .001) in mean weight (−15 lbs) and mean body mass index (−1.8) were observed. Evaluation of QOL measures by the HSQ and ESS showed no significant changes in health concepts or daytime somnolence. Significant improvements (P ≤ .05) in mood and affective states were noted on each of the POMS' 6 subscales. Regular exercise training and weight loss resulted in significant improvements in the A&H Index, sleep efficiency, aerobic capacity, body mass index, and mood/affective states; and thus offers another intervention alternative for the conservative management of some individuals with OSAS." @default.
