- W2076228343 abstract "The spread of the market has geographical, economic and cultural dimensions. The market economy is an historical development; European expansion entailed not only discovery, exploration and migration but also the introduction of commercial markets to non-European peoples. Non-Europeans produced commodities for Europe, an arrangement whereby they became part of a world system. Since the economic behaviour of non-European peoples has not conformed precisely to textbook ideals, it is frequently assumed that culture acted as a barrier to rational behaviour. For the Canadian subarctic, the argument has been made that culture and politics, not economics, mediated over the relationship between Indians and Europeans in the fur trade. The use of inappropriate economic concepts, such as the equation of profit motive with rationality, has resulted in a less than satisfactory understanding of Indian-European trade relationships. Reconsideration of Indian economic behaviour is necessary because in the post-1870 period competitive fur-buyers challenged the Hudson's Bay Company's monopoly. Descriptive sources indicate that Indians were aware of the differences between competitive and monopolistic markets. Accounting data from the Company's posts are presented as economic indices (value of furs, costs of furs, profit levels) thereby permitting an analysis of the effects of Indian responses to the price system. Karl Polanyi's term “market pattern” provides a useful concept for resolving the debate concerning the culture, politics and economics of Indian participation in the trade." @default.
